In Their Own Words: Primal Soul Boudoir

I didn’t come into boudoir the traditional way. Before this, I spent over 30 years teaching women’s self-defense. I helped women move through fear, trust themselves again, and respond with confidence when it mattered. As a result, that work shaped how I see people. So many of them are used to being strong for everyone else, but they don’t always feel seen themselves.

Photography had always been a creative outlet — design, branding, visual storytelling. But Primal Soul Boudoir really took shape once I combined it with that deeper understanding of fear and trust.

What drew me wasn’t the imagery — it was what happens before the image. The hesitation. A flicker of self-doubt. The moment someone decides to show up anyway. That’s the part I understand.

My approach isn’t about posing someone into confidence. It’s about guiding them into a place where it shows up naturally. Not transformation, but rediscovery. In fact, the confidence I see in my clients isn’t something I create — it’s something they’ve had all along.

Lifestyle boudoir. I’m not trying to create something overly posed or commercial. Instead, I want the images to feel like a real, intimate moment — like you’ve caught a glimpse of someone comfortable in their own skin. There’s guidance behind everything we do, but the result never feels staged.

And it’s a luxury experience in the truest sense. We don’t rush you in and out, and you won’t share the day with anyone else. We set the entire session aside for you — to relax, have fun, and be taken care of. By the end, you leave with more than images. You leave with something real, and the photos become the reminder of it.

People who are a little hesitant but still curious. They aren’t walking in completely confident, but they feel that pull — like “I think I need this, I’m just not sure yet.” They’re often in a transition — a new chapter or a milestone. Or it’s a quiet realization that they’ve been putting themselves last for a long time.

Still, they don’t need hype or to be pushed. They need someone who understands how to guide them through that hesitation without making them feel behind.

A lot of what influences my work goes beyond photography. I’ve been an artist my whole life. Early on, that was comic-book art, and I was drawn to characters who carried both strength and complexity. Over time that expanded into fantasy and mythology — warrior women and figures like Freyja, Skadi, Athena, and Artemis.

But what’s always mattered isn’t the fantasy — it’s what those stories represent: strength that already exists, presence that doesn’t need to be forced. Combined with 30 years of teaching self-defense, I pay close attention to small shifts — body language, breathing, the moment someone settles in. Visually, I’m drawn to simplicity: light, shadow, and natural movement.

The moments when they stop thinking about the session and just start having fun. In fact, they relax, they laugh, they forget there’s a camera. I love the quick reactions when I show them the back of the camera mid-shoot — that little bit of surprise: “Wait… that’s me?”

But the biggest moment is always the reveal. Seeing themselves in a way they didn’t expect. That never gets old.

It starts well before they walk in. Our discovery call isn’t a quick check-in — it’s a real conversation. We get to know who they are, what they’re excited about, and what they’re nervous about. Then we talk through insecurities openly, so nothing feels unspoken later. That lets us design a session around them, visually and emotionally. So when they arrive, it already feels familiar instead of intimidating.

From there, we guide everything. They never wonder what to do with their hands or whether they’re doing it “right.” And we don’t rush. Confidence isn’t something I expect them to bring — it shows up naturally when they feel safe, supported, and understood.

Like themselves again. Not a different version, not someone they have to become — just reconnected. More comfortable in their own skin, a little more present, a little more certain of what they already have.

For a lot of people, that confidence has been there the whole time. Still, it’s just buried under responsibilities and time. If they can look at their images and recognize that person in a positive way, that’s what matters most. The goal was never to change them — it was to help them see what’s already there.

I don’t have a single favorite. The ones that stand out are the moments during the reveal when real emotion shows up. Sometimes it’s quiet, sometimes tears, sometimes excitement they can’t hold back. That’s how I know we’ve hit the mark. In that moment, they’re seeing a part of themselves they may have hidden, forgotten, or never realized was there.

For me it’s less about a concept and more about location. I’d love to take this experience to places most people don’t get to see. Think castles in Scotland, the coastlines of Greece, the beaches of Costa Rica, or the Bahamas. There’s something about a place like that. It slows you down and pulls you out of your routine. That creates space to be present in a way that’s harder to access in everyday life.

You can’t rush trust. Early on, it’s easy to focus on processes, pricing, and growth. But none of that matters if the person in front of you doesn’t feel comfortable. People don’t need convincing; they need to feel understood.

The more I’ve leaned into that, the better everything else has become — stronger connections, better sessions, more meaningful reactions. So as a business owner, my job is to create that environment first. Everything else follows.

Focus on the experience, not just the images. Good photos might get someone’s attention, but the experience is what builds trust, referrals, and longevity. So take the time to understand the person in front of you.

And understand that this is a business built on relationships — get out from behind the screen and be present in your community. It’s not about being everywhere; it’s about being known.

Refining the experience even further — not by adding more, but by simplifying and making it more intentional. So every step, from the first discovery call through the final reveal, feels clear and easy.

I’m also excited about building something more personal around the work. It’s a sense of identity and connection for the people who come through the studio. Something they feel a part of, not just something they did once.

Our focus this year is simple: work with 100 individuals or couples. We want to give them the chance to experience a true luxury boudoir session. That means the time, the guidance, and the space to relax and actually enjoy it.

Whether it’s someone doing this for themselves, a couple capturing their connection, or someone stepping into something new — that’s the goal. 100 meaningful experiences this year. That’s what we’re building toward.

We designed our studio to feel private, calm, and intentional. Every corner helps people slow down and feel comfortable from the moment they walk in. So we only photograph one client per day. That means no overlap, no waiting area full of people, no pressure to move quickly. We set the entire day aside for the person we’re working with.

Most of our clients have never done anything like this before, so we’ve built the experience around removing as much uncertainty as possible.
